Kohler sv735 running rich blowing black smoke. Left and right wires have spark but when I pull right plug wire there is no change in engine sputtering and knocking. No metal in oil. Pull the left and it dies. Backfire when turning off. Thought I saw a yellow spark from back of motor when I started it once from around the starter area but not anywhere where I could see any wireing. At one point after I pulled the right wire off and started the motor a red wire on the right side tied wrapped to the plastic intake manifold arcked from one side of the connector to the other but when I put the plug wire back on it did not arc any more. Any ideas?

Tring to bring it back after sitting in the weather for about 2 years. Courage only has 130 hours on it.

what tractor is it on?
It's on a Craftsman GS6500. I attached both the Chraftsman and Kohler tags with all the info on the Tractor.

Aright. Its no secret that this is an electrical issue. I'm not familiar with Kohlers, but I'll try to get things started.

The "arc" that you see is electricity "escaping" from somewhere.

Does the engine have a good ground? or is the neg batt cable toast?

Have you checked the plug wires? Maybe the UV light from sitting outside has broken down the insulation.

Take a look at the wiring from the batt to the starter and solenoid. Sometimes animals take to building nests or eating the insulation off of wiring.
Check the wire(s) to and from the coil.

Electrical probs can be tough.

Here is a diagram for the wiring.

mdigby always helping with schematics :) Definately sounds like you have some electrical gremlins. The backfiring when you shut it off could be due to bad gas/bad adjusted carb. If it is too rich (or has weak spark too) the cylinder had undurbed gas in it when you shut the motor off, and it loads up the exhaust and ignites- BOOM! backfire - my buddies JD with a 16 single cyl Kohler does it all the time
Thanks for all the good advice. That's what I kinda figured. Somewhere somehow something is shorted and robbing the system. I let y'all know what I find out. The wiring diagram will definitely help.
