I was collecting leaves with my power flo bagger set up and after about an 45 minutes of non stop running the tractor (JD 1987 214) coughed some black smoke then died in mid operation? the tractor does smoke (white) and I do watch the oil level, but I thought this was strange...

It did start up mow/ leaf collect after about 5 minutes and ran fine for another 15 minutes until I put it away. the engine sounded fine???

why would it just die? I thought the engine was smoked at first, but then it ran fine???

seems like mechanical right?

Well, it could be a number of things, but I do not think your engine pooped the bed. First off you said it coughed black smoke. that indicates gasoline, and something made it not burn completely. It could be either a fuel system failure, or an electrical problem regarding ignition. Check the simple things first; is there water/dirt in your fuel system ? If so you must completely drain it and install a new fuel filter while your at it.( Do not use dry gas. as the alcohol distroys diaphrams and other carburation part's).If there is dirt in the system you will need to remove and clean the jets & fuel valve on the inside of the carburator. Is the problem electrical ?; Clean and gap your sparkplug, or replace it. check for lose ignition wires, and the key switch itself, over time chemical reactions corrode these connections and failure is immeint. A coil could be failing, or condensor ? . Clean/adjust or replace your points if not equipped with electronic ignition. That should get you headed in the right direction. Good luck to you -Randy

My dad's 314 does that sometimes. It stops suddenly, the engine spins freely to a stop (sticking valve). After about five minutes it starts and runs fine. I need to pull the head and clean out the carbon.
