Is this normal for the JD 1026R?

7247 Views 17 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  GADeereHunter
When starting my 1026 when cold only approx. 50 to 55 degrees. When I turn the key it makes a clicking noise then it stops turning over. It normally starts on the 3rd try. Also the height adjustment knob does not go all the way to the lock position and when installing the 60D MMM deck you have to go past the install location on the knob. My JD dealer said it is just a guide and if I adjust it so it will be accurate then the auto deck hook up may not work. Does anyone have info on these issues?

Thanks
Andy

For the starting procedure, I have not experienced that symptom. I've only started mine approximately 50 times in 24 hours of engine run time. Each time I do start it warm or cold (down to 7* F) it fires so quickly that I can not discern the sound of the starter. It is usually about one second of cranking or about 4 revolutions. When the ambient air temp is below 30*F it will chug grey smoke for about four seconds. I suspect you may have a loose battery cable connection on either the batt or engine end.

My experience with the deck has been limited to only one removal, so I can't be much help on that one. However I suspect your mid rockshaft is out of adjustment. With the deck removed lay on you back under the machine and cycle the MMM lift arms up and down to see what does what.

The sound you are hearing sounds like your fuel pump starting and then stopping when it has met pressure.

This is not something I really hear on my 2305 but I sure noticed it on my buddy's 1026R
I want to make sure you are understanding my question. When you turn the key to the first position waiting for the light to come on to try to start. I hear the fuel pump/ When I turn the key to start it clicks really fast then trys to start then just stops turning over. After 3 tries it will start up usually on the third try. I called the dealer today... i am not very happy with the support from them so far. He told me if it gets where it will not start at all call them back.

sounds like a loose electrical connection or battery issue to me. slkpk
Sounds like a loose batt connection. Who's your dealer in your part of NC? I'd just call em back and tell them that it wont start. Never heard of such a lame answer!
The dealer is in Smithfield NC.

Ditto what the Hook Doc said.
:ditto::ditto:
Hey Andy what part of NC you located? I'm in the Western part of the state and all three of the dealers I've found in the 6 years I've had my 2305 have closed down, 2 of the three were just downright awesome.
That starting thing just isn't right I would call and start doing a little demanding.
i start my 1023E on pretty cold days (-17c last weekend) and other than the typical diesel cold clatter there's no unusual noises like you're describing unless you mean the noise that the relay for the glowplugs makes, but thats a slight buzzing noise if you ask me. Take some video and post it up.
I am in the central part of NC. I called my dealership today and spoke with the service manager. He agreed that this is not correct. He thinks it may be a bad starter. He said he will have a technician come out to my home in the next two days. Seems like if you are too nice they just blow you off. Shame you have to show your.... to get something done. Yes I know you have the noise as the glowplug heats up. This is when you turn the key to start. I will update when they come out and check it out. Thanks everyone1

I'm gonna agree that it sounds like a starter thing. Also, on your MMM I've only connected mine twice now but I had the same issue. I just moved the knob till it connected and didn't really think much about it. If there is an exact spot that the knob is supposed to be in let us know please.

I had the dealer give me all the install docs for the lift kit and mower. They don't seem to do that normally, I guess most people don't want them. Those instructions have really clear directions and pics on how to adjust everything. Suffice it to say that you can a) have the dial read properly and b) have the MMM connect and detach smoothly... You just have to adjust everything carefully. It is a pretty different setup than my old 2305 (or other 2xxx machines) and took a little bit to figure out. Those docs are pretty key to that process. :)

Good luck,
Hunter

I have experienced a type of the issue you explain about starting. the issue found was not cabling or the starter but the terminal of the battery was broken inside the battery. was able to turn the battery terminal by hand. replaced the battery and the tractor was able to start with every turn of the key and not hit or miss. :praying:

Glad ya got em excited and goin Andy! Gotta love the good ole boys at ECE. As a SM yur the first line of defense when a fault occurs. You dont ever blow off and you dang sure dont go sayin what you THINK the issue is. You appologize and get someone rolling at the next available time slot. Its getting fert season, will soon be planting season. They need to get on it or yur SOL. And 2 days before he gets there.. he better have starter in hand to R/R if needed.

Ok, i have my tractor working properly now. I took delivery about 10 days ago. The problem with the starting was the same as someone else posted battery post was broke inside the battery. The technician that came out also adjusted the MMM and it now locks when the control knob is in the lock position. Now when you install the MMM you put it in the "install" position and the auto connect works perfedty. Also got the missing toolbox. I have found it is better to just contact the service manager and not the guy who sold it to me. After contacting him they got right out and fixed the problems. Now time to go out and enjoy the tractor.
