I'm in need of a tractor...quick. We just moved into this house over the winter. We have a total of 3.5 acres, of which about 2.75 needs mowing. After 2 months of use, my Craftsman LT1000 has called it quits. That was 10 days ago. My lawn is getting ugly...fast.

I'm assuming I need something heavy duty. The local tractor dealer has a used LT1554, and their asking $1500. Looks in very good shape, has 150 hours on it. 27hp motor, 54" deck. My budget is $1500, so it's right at the top.

Is this a good mower for the money?

mine has about 330 hours on it and so far so good. I mow three acres. it is kind of a gas hog, burns about a gallon an acre. but it does everything I ask of it. and has never failed to start up and do the job. I got the optional sleeve hitch for it, which I would recommend to anyone. trying to find a cheap snowblade for it. the mower deck belt wore out at 300 hours. it pulls an agrifab tow behind tiller with no problem at all. plus a cart full of firewood no problem. I am happy with it so far. it is a 2005 model.

I'd say it's a good 54" machine for the money, but ~3 acres is going to tough on any machine. I would definintely want something more substantial as time goes on; A commercial style zero turn, a compact utiliity tractor, etc..
