Someone on my local CL has a JD 400 with 60" deck, 3 pt hitch, disc, and scraper blade listed for $900. Says motor has broke rod. Would it be worth that? What repower options would I have?

It seems that many 400s have a broken rod. There was a 400 on CL in my area with less than 400 hours that had the same issue. I know that you can get a Vanguard kit from SEW that will repower it. If you look at the WFM site you will see some guys discuss the different repower (Briggs, Kohler, Honda) projects they have done.

i would not have a problem spending money on that package. even if the tractor is pretty ratty. the motor can be fixed or replaced.

I was looking for that ad, MowJoe. I came across two misleading ads that could have possibly been scams. Kinda interesting. Here's one...

http://greensboro.craigslist.org/grd/4047008526.html

It's advertised as a 112 Electric Lift but its a 140 H1.

Then there is this one...

http://westmd.craigslist.org/grd/3964635565.html

I think it's a scam because it shows two different tractors. The first pic is a 400 with a 420 hood and the second pic is a 420...weird...
smoking hot deals!!! if i had the money, and they were closer...sigh....:Disgus:

That could be a 400 which had the hood damaged and replaces with a 420 hood.

That's a good price for 400 with a broken motor and all of the attachments. Yes, the right rod tends to breaking because it's the last component to get oil and if you don't monitor the oiling system then bad things happen.

There are a couple of repower kits with the Briggs Vanguard probably being the most popular. You could just rebuild the kohler, it will be about the same money or less. Finding parts maybe a bit of a chore but they are out there. The good thing about using the stock motor is you know it all fits etc. They make plenty of power.
