Hello! My wife and I have a fleet (3) of John Deere lawn mowers that for some reason are always in need of work. Currently have a JD 316 with Onan engine, not running. A JD 318 with Briggs and Stratton re-power, not running. And last we have an L110 with a replacement 12.5 HP engine where a 17 HP engine originally was and it is the only one that actually works on a consistent basis. The 318 was the first because the wife fell in love with the body style and had to have it. It has had a complete frame off restoration including the re-power, which currently has a damaged crankshaft and pistons, and has a brand new mower deck under it. Currently re-assembling re-power unit using a new short block and rest of original engine in an attempt to get it back to working condition. Believe that heat trapped under engine and side cover and side covers caused oil to bake in engine and turned to tar. This time ventilation holes have been punched in side covers for removing heat generated by the Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine. JD 316 has Onan engine and was bought last fall as a parts mower for 318 but worked so well last fall decided to use it as main mower. Mowed great first time this spring and was put away. Second time went to take mower out to use it it wouldn't start and still cannot find why it won't run. At this point frustrated with unit and it is at retired John Deere mower mechanic and so far he has not been able to come up with answer yet either. So I will probably be asking a lot of questions on this site.
