Red, did you happen to note if the pump was pressure-switched or continuous run? I remember potable water pumps on such as houseboats that ran when the pressure got below a set point, and shut off when the demand was removed. I would have thought that the fuel pump on one of those critters would have had a much longer life.
I wonder if there might be some crud in the pressure switch, if it were so equipped, which backed off when pressure was relieved for a while, and got pushed into the switch somehow when pressure was raised.
