I was at a customers house today. He has a Scotts 1846 (?) under his deck. I asked him about it and long story short, the trans is dead but he said he'd give me a good price on it as is.

It's been sitiing a while. long enough for one of the rear tires to dry rot and go flat. I didn't get anymore info.

What manufacture built this model for Scotts (John Deere?). I'm considering buying it but need info on rebuilding the trans (shop told him $400 for one).

Any help?

Scotts was a JD and also Murray, and MTD at various points in its history. JD had it last and it eventually was discontinued and became the L and LA Series that was the bottom line of JD. You would need to check under the hood and you should see a sticker tag with a parts list for it and a phone number. You should be able to find out using the phone number who made it.

I wouldn't give very much for it. That trans if bought new,( I assume it is a hydro) would easily top $400 to maybe be more like $650 and up with it making the rider, not worth the cost. I only would give about $50-$75 and that would be if I could hear the engine running or was assured it was a good runner before it was parked. Just my .2 cents

I'm not familiar with the JD units, but if it's built by Murray the model number will look something like this.

12345xab.

The state of origin will be Tennessee. Either way I'm with hankll, it's not like you are getting a Case, Bolens or older JD worth putting money and sweat into. At the end of the day after spending the money and the time for repairs, you still just have an entry level lawn tractor be it a Murray or JD unit. Unless the good price is free, I would pass.

I agree with free. You know the tranny and tires are shot, probably the engine.

Buy the time you spend the money on the trans and tires and what ever it takes t get it running, you can fine a good running one for that money. Unless it's free or almost free and you have time to wait to get a very good deal on good used parts than go for it. I got my S2546 that was like new with a dump cart. It had maybe 20hrs. on it at most for $475.00. There are tons of lawn tractors out there. Just take your time and be at the right place at the right time. :thThumbsU
