Well, I had to buy another boat, the Stingray is great, fast and fun but at $100 + to take it out is killer just to do some fishing ..... I found me a 14' jon boat with a late 60's Evinrude 18HP Fastwin, its ok for fishing, if I want to go fast I take the bowrider out but anyway ...

I was out sunday and the impeller broke, and there is really no way to tell on a engine that old, till it went sputer bang pow and stoped ........ I knew then what happend, smoke from the hood and the metal pinging noise :banghead3
trolling motor got me a good ways till another boat passed by and towed me to the ramp, where I of couse seen the Marine Police, who like always has to inspect you stem to stern. So I get home over an hour later, and decide to see how bad it is.

I pull the rope and it moves ...... hmmm yank on it, nothing, choke it yank on it and vroom it comes to life, so I shut it down .

Anyway so I know it will run now, and I got the new impeller comming in.

So my question is whats the chance of the engine being toast since it does fire and seems to run right?

I have herd that the old outboards like this are almost bullet proof.

And yes I know :wwp: I will get some up of it soon.

If it starts that easy I doubt you hurt it too bad. With our old '54 15 horse 'Rude on the fishing boat, I've gotten in the habit of checking quite frequently to see if water is coming out the upper exhaust ports even though I know the impeller is in good shape.

Well it must of broke right when I started it up from fishing ...... Before I went fishing I ran it about 4 miles and when I shut it down to fish it was not hot or having any issues. I didnt make it to far after I started it up and took off, maybe 5 minutes , but it did cut off on its own, its almost like it locked up but it didn't obvously since it started up and ran when I got home (only let it run 20 seconds to see if it was pumping)

Guess I will know next weekend when I take it out :dunno:

I hope you didn't hurt it. What You may want to do is add the squirter outlet to your engine. I have done this on a few of my past outboards. Instead of having to watch the exhaust for the water spitting out buy the little plastic nozzle and drill and mount it in the lower cowling and tap into the block with a fitting and hose connected to the outlet. Then it always easy to see the stream of water and ensure the water pump is working.
