yes the gear is replacable. If you have a local lawnmower shop, they proably will have them as they are not very hard or expensive to replace.Mine cost $5.00 at the lawnmower shop. Hope this helps:thThumbsU
If you have the starter off, take it with you to the shop. They probably have the tool to remove , and replace, the "c" ring from the top. Pop off the retainer and replace the pinnion gear. Before you, or they, put the gear back on, check for tightness. I found mine was too snug and it didn't return like it was supposed too. I just cleaned up the gear with some 80 grit sand paper and it works fine now. Good luck!
If you're in the HRM,the guy running Acadia small engines is by far the least expensive that I've dealt with.Look for a large white sign on the right 1/2 way between Lw Sackville and Mt Uniack.I think he in th Mt Uniack white pages and he has some used parts as well.G'luck
My starter drive gear looked like that! A new gear cost less than five dollars, I installed it myself. While I was at it, I shimmed the starter to push the gear completely into contact with the flywheel. I used two 3/8 inch lock washers to raise it up. I think it will last longer with better contact.
