Maybe just a good bath and maintenance would do it. How does it run? Looks complete, make a nice machine when it's rehabbed. Good luck
Thats how it happens. You start out with one and then two. Then you start looking and the next thing you know three and four and looking for more.Welcome to the club im a tractor:drunkie:holic to.

:ditto: They seem to bring home friends and relatives. Since you have the 165 you probably know about the starter relay. What year is the 180? I don't recall seeing a 3-spoke steering wheel before; all of mine are two spokes. Also curious to know if it has the 20" rear tires that go with the 46" deck. Congrats on the new "tool" :fing32:

I did notice one thing! HUMMMMMMM
Where was it stored ?. The dust is an inch thick.
Your 165 look like new !!
Try this.... Hi may name is Gifix and I'm a tractorholic.

Very nice shop!!!!! I notice the CANS of JD green and yellow on the bench.
The yellow is handy to paint the wheels without having to take them off using a sponge brush.

I'll let you know on the year and tires...its so fresh all i had time to do was get pics. Apparently the guy i got it from got it at an auction...engine apparently runs (but didn't yesterday so 1/2 the price) and reverse doesn't work...so i have some work to do....but i'm confident i can have it looking like it's 165 buddy in the background soon. :thThumbsU

If you have to go into the transaxle be sure to check out this thread and the link to the IPBs: http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=136247
Thanks!

I started ripping into it last night and have come across a problem. The u bolts that hold the transaxle to the frame are rusted right into the transaxle. Nothing I can do can pursuade the trans to drop. I don't want to break the casting of the transaxle. Anyone have any ideas. I've let it soak in pentrating fluid... My though was to cut off the top of the U and then clean it out when I have the transaxle on the floor....are these U parts still available? Should I try heat first?

Thanks everyone!

That sounds like a tough one. Possibly some careful sideways pressure on the ubolts with an air hammer would vibrate them loose.
Check the JD parts site here for availability before you start cutting. For now I'd stick to penetrating oil and maybe some vibration or judicious use of heat.
That 180 doesn't look too bad. I saw a 185 at the dealer the other day that had a nice hood, but no (as in nada, none) paint on the floor pan and fender deck. I think it was Katt's Rusty's long lost cousin. Good luck with your project, keep us posted.:fing32:
If I may suggest, heat the u bolt (not the transaxle) red hot and immediately after give it a good shower with a lot of cold water.

It should unjam the u bolt from the casting.:goodl:
Thanks!

Also discovered that the deck has a nice crack in it, but otherwise solid (around the spindle that takes power from the engine and drives the blades) Otherwise it's solid. Is my best bet to add a steel plate underneath and weld it up nice (i plan on stripping it all down and painting it too) Has anyone out there done this with great success?

You probably need to dig deeper to find out about the crack. Is the deck shell bent? Do the blades still spin true? I'm not a fan of the 46" deck for mowing. After using mine on the 180 I ended up buying the 185 to get back into a 38" deck for mowing. That said, I just changed the 185 over to the 46" deck for doing leaves to get the powerflow bagger. 46" deck with powerflow will probably pack 3 to 5 times more leaves into the bags.

I had the same problem pulling the trans from a 111 I scrapped. Heating the U-bolt up with the torch and then tapping it with a hammer did the trick for me.
