Took the transmission case off my 812 and when I did all these gears and shafts fell to the floor. Sooooo I am gonna part this tractor out and I'm picking up a 20G with a 60" deck for $2,000 tomorrow. Anybody need any parts off an 812? I'll post some pics of it below.

That's not the end of the world. With the manual you can put it all back right.

I could give you a list of things i wasn't good enough to do - that i did. Like my SIL always says "how hard could it be?"

I too believe you could do it, by studying the manual, taking pics, communicating with the powerful know how available here.

You're not the first guy here who jumbled the take apart. I've read most of the stories. Most are surprised at how smart they are when they conquer it.

Husband to wife: "My 812 is dirty. Too dirty to use. I can't imagine how long it will take to clean it. Plus its old. I found this REALLY nice 20G for not too much money . . . . ."

I have done that very thing. Not using too dirty as the reason, and it wasn't a 20G, but you get the idea.

With all the parts right there on the floor, rebuilding it is a simple enough, though tedious, matter of one step at a time.

Ohhh man, that's funny!

But, spot on two counts. First, they say sharks can smell a drop of blood in a mile of ocean..........amateurs. :drunkie: Second, that's my kind of shirt and my kind of ride. Nothin' but style :not_worth

Rock on!

Don't fret, use this as a learning experience. Having to go into a transmission on one of these things is almost inevitable. As other's have said, just get the G series manual and follow the pictures. Mark the shafts by each number, setting them on a piece of cardboard. You'll get them back in and working.

Also, what kind of condition is the 20-G? That's a bit on the high range for price, IMO.

In seriousness, Al referred to the "how hard could it be?" phrase earlier. The one I use a lot is.......what's to lose? The worst case scenario is you have a pile of parts and a non functioning tranny. Presently, you have a pile of parts and a non functioning tranny. So, no down side. Upside? You learn some, get it done, and say you did it :thThumbsU

Middle side: You can say at least you tried, and have a cold beer :thThumbsU

Nobody can do anything until they try.
There's a lot of great people and help here on this site, just look at the responses you've gotten without even asking yet.
Sure, purchase that new tractor and then take your time this Winter and rebuild that tranny, it's a new project to you now, but there is so much satisfaction in knowing that you can do it.

What everyone else said, oh and the hard part is done. It's apart. It's pretty near impossible to take the trans apart without something falling out of place.
Get the manual mentioned, it does an excellent job of explaining what goes where. I'll even throw my hat into the ring as a helper.
I've done one and it's real easy. Go look at my 816 thread on post 206. There are some good pictures of the internals. Trust us, we'll help you get this puppy back together. That 812 is too nice to part out.

wow Devans that manual should make it pretty easy to put the transmission back together, should I take it off the tractor and set it on a tire like the picture showed?

TIA

Mine was off the tractor when I did it and I had it sitting on a lift. But I put an entirely different transmission in. I did tear mine down for the PTO, seals a such.
This being your first I'd take the transmission off just because gravity will keep everything in place. Nothing more frustrating than putting stuff in several times.

Here is another good manual: http://www.gravelymanuals.com/pdf/Pro_G_Serv_Man.pdf

Start on page 16 and it has a step by step process for removing the shafts. Just reverse it for install. The nice thing about that method is gravity isn't going to fight you when you start to replace the shafts, i.e., races or gears sliding off the shafts.
