"The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the collision. And it's too early to speculate on exactly what caused the wreck until that probe is done, said Sam Sacco, a spokesman for ship owner and operator Foss Marine."

Gee, I wonder what the results of the investigation will be ?

Maybe the bridge was to low ??? :dunno:

There is a suburb of St.Paul called Stillwater. It is next to the St.Croix river and has an old 1931 built lift bridge to cross over to Wisconsin. Lots of people in Wisconsin work in the Twin Cities and drive through Stillwater. The bridge is 2 lanes and 30mph speed limit. It goes through downtown Stillwater regular 2 lane roads. Traffic on the Minnesota side backs up 1 mile every weekday after 5 pm with cars idling filling downtown with fumes. Traffic on the Wisconsin side backs up 2-3 miles in the morning to cross this bridge. Roads leading to it on both sides of the river are 4 lane highways. They first proposed replacing the bridge back in the 1950s. Subsequent attempts for a new bridge continued through the years. They were just a couple of days away from ground breaking for a new bridge in 1995 when some greenies filed a lawsuit and stopped it. Now there is a bill that passed the US Senate 100-0 allowing the bridge to be built while bypassing some Scenic Rivers act. It has yet to pass through the US House. The bridge was featured on a show on the History Channel 1 year ago in which they showed the crumbling infrastructure of America. When the river floods they have to weigh the bridge down with those big 3 feet tall cement dividers so the water does not push the bridge over. It sometimes gets stuck in the upright position because it gets out of allignment. It has rust holes through large steel beams. If that had happened to this bridge next to Stillwater there would be people throwing parties in celebration.

Isn't that what a LOCAL pilot gets paid to do??

Aren't there signs before hand--like on road bridges?? Nobody checked??

They could use the bridge for the next Dukes of Hazard movie.

I have been across that bridge a couple times over the years. Seeing the rusty "beams" as you crawl across it with several other cars, bumper to bumper REALLY wigs me out. I actually had to drive over that bridge several times the same day the 35W came down. talk about nerves!!!!
