Called the folks and the part number they gave me is:

MOSCTLX015444

build code - 0228008

It has John Deere labels according to the current owners (they bought it
from another user)

not sure what you are asking - Yes, I see the 3 weights in the JD product description picture. Are you saying to make sure to buy 3 weights if I end up getting this used tiller?

yes....u may need them for traction.. I also don't see the lift linkage that u may need too (in the Craig's ad)

for 400 it is a good buy if it will fit ur machine..

If you want or need a tiller I would RUN and pick it up. It will work with your X500, you just need to spend another $4-500 to get the lift parts. That'd put you in for $900 on what would be $1700 new! I've got a parts list if you're interested.

As for the rear weights, they're for added traction... You can run wheel weights instead (I do) but you are going to need to either buy the front wheel weight kit or add the front bumper weight bracket ($50) and 2 or 3 suitcase weights on the front for ballast.

Wizzo - yes, a parts list would be great. Not knowing what this particular tiller needs to be operational with my x500 is a bit unnerving to say the least. I mentioned the "black tiller" to my JD salesman just a couple hrs ago when I went in to pay for the x500 and he admitted only seeing the "yellow ones." I have to take this for what it is worth as he only sells a handful of 500 series/yr.

Plan on spending close to 500 bucks to get it hooked up and running.

I believe the X500 Series style of tiller has been around since sometime in the 1980s, they just update the frame/attachment points to fit new machines. The black tiller I've heard was for the JD Sabre line of tractors (ie the Deere stickers). You might need some pieces to attach to the tiller frame and you will certainly need the parts that make up the lift system.

Possible pieces neede for the frame:
19M8724 SCREW | M12 X 50
M153418 SPACER
14M7401 LOCK NUT | M12
M134732 Latch
M134130 PIN FASTENER
AM135214 CLIP | RH
03M7185 BOLT | M8 X 25
14M7396 LOCK NUT | M8
24M7055 WASHER | 8.400 X 16 X 1.600 MM
M88183 RING
AM135215 CLIP | LH
11M7080 COTTER PIN | 2.500 X 16 MM

Pieces needed for the lift system:
24H1441 WASHER | 1-1/64in. X 1-1/2in. X 0.048in.
M154254 BUSHING
M154252 BUSHING
M154626 BUSHING
M154255 LINK
19M7139 CAP SCREW | M8 X 20
14M7166 LOCK NUT | M8
AM135571 BRACE
M46192 PIN FASTENER
M88183 RING
M76877 NLA (YOKE???)
14H856 NUT | 1/2in.
M154256 ROD
14H881 NUT | 1/2in.
M154251 YOKE
19M8162 SCREW | M10 X 40
24M7101 WASHER | 11 X 34 X 3 MM
M79145 SPACER
14M7400 LOCK NUT | M10
M154257 PLATE
19M7817 SCREW | M12 X 70
M150380 SPACER | (SUB FOR E57570)
24M7180 WASHER | 13 X 37 X 3 MM
M154265 BUSHING
14M7401 LOCK NUT | M12
M154193 BUSHING
19M7816 SCREW | M12 X 65

It's a little easier to understand once you go to JDParts.com and look up the parts diagrams. I also have this list in spreadsheet format with price quotes - PM me an email address and I'll send you a copy. I used to have a link to the manual but it doesn't work anymore. The tiller is a nice edition to an X5xx, so for a little over $900 and some minor paint work you could have a nice tiller at a discount. Oh yeah, you will have to take the seat and fenderdeck off your new X500 in order to install the lift parts... It's a good way to get to know your machine.

Thanks again Wizzo and for the spreadsheet! that link really helps trying to visualize the parts needed. I am curious, what year(s) of tiller will just bolt up to our current x500's? I assume there is a specific model number on the tiller. After seeing another user's up close pic of his tiller, the number the seller gave me is the serial number, not the model number.

On another note, I was able to p/u my x500 last night and delivered it to my lot. Mowed about 1/2 an acre, and my wife and kids (14/12 y.o.) got to take her for a spin! Hope to post some pics after today.

Enjoy that X500 while the kids still let you drive it... I'm not sure of exactly what year will bolt right up, but it should as long as the front clips are on top of the tiller frame rather than on the side. As for the serial number thing, most attachments are that way.
