I am replacing the hydrostatic transmition in my craftsman 16.5hp rider. I had to take the axels out of the new one and use my old axels as the last owner cut the axels because they were going to use it in something else and never did..

I have everything cleaned up and am wondering what it is exactly the fluid is I need to put back in the new tranny. It doesn't look like a normal transmition fluid, and kind of looks like a gear oil or something.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Use 20w-50 Engine oil. Use synthetic if you can spare the extra dough. That's what they call for. I had to change the fluid in one i use to have I wound up putting an extra pipe plug next to the vent tube. It will save you loads of time when you fill it.
