Hydro Tranny 318-0610 problem...

4137 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Plowthesidewalk
I have a Craftsman Lawn Tractor FS5500 (917.276860) that is having tranny problems. Reverse works normally. But if I press all the way forward it will not go at all. I have to press the pedal down halfway and it seems to go about half speed or a bit more. Is this a dying tranny or is this indicative of some kind of linkage issue?

Have you read the "Loss of Drive" section on page 34 of the manual?

Yes, now I have. The belt looks okay but I will remove the deck for a closer look. The other two conditions don't fit.

Finally got time to work on the tractor. Belt looks fins. On of the two linkages to the tranny from the forward/reverse pedal is really loose. I am wondering if this linkage was messed with by the local mower repair guy right before this issue. It is the linkage with a spring on the end attached to the tranny. Looks like it should be attached to something else along the way instead of just flopping around from the front to the back. It just seems way too loose.

Ran out of time to play with it. Changed the oil, spark plugs, filters and mowed some. I really, really hate to take it in to the shop...

The tranny might need to have a fluid and filter change depending on the model number on the tranny.
The tranny has 120 hours on it and the manual says it is sealed. I am not sure how I would do that.
You might want to request warranty service if it is still under warranty.
Would if it was. Can't because it isn't.
I have a Craftsman 917-273223 and I recently changed the oil & filter in the Hydro-Gear model 222-3010L. The sears manual said it was non serviceable but when I looked at the unit closely I noticed it had an oil filter on it so I therefore assumed it was serviceable. Further checking I noticed a drain plug on the bottom of the unit but no fill hole so I called Hydro-gear and they were most helpful, the technician told me how to drain the unit and refill it to the proper level. The unit is working better than ever since changing the fluid.

Great advice. Just called them. The service rep stated that it sounded like a linkage issue and that is was most likely nothing wrong with the transmission. However, the oil and filter are able to be changed by the end user according to the manual on their site. They said that their website is down right now but let me know that the service manual for my tranny is 310-0510 through 0710. I went outside to check out the linkages again, stepped on a tool someone had not put away, and cut my foot. Nice. Will look at it later.

Good reason to take a break.
