Is the belt tight and not slipping?
How is the oil level?
Some get good results by changing the hydro's oil.
From what you say, it's a sudden change, so I'd guess a loose belt or sticking idler pulley mechanism (or out of adjustment).
A close look at the "shifter" is in order, looking for something broken, loose, or sticking.
