Hey guys, doing first hydro oil change on x739. I have had the oil wrench on it which just slips(plastic) and a rubber universal oil filter wrench on it. It refuses to spin and the wrench is crushing the filter. Any advise? I have had some tough filters but this one is not budging and starting to collapse more than I would like.

I had trouble with the first filter change on my x728. And, I ended up with a pretty crunched up one. I used a toothed filter wrench and made a mechanics pact with it, which is to say, it was the filter or me, and I didn't intend to fail. Just grip it as low on the filter as you can, and grunt that sucker off. I can't imagine a filter would defeat a spartan. Now, maybe a Nittany Lion, well, that's a different thread.

Sounds like it was installed with a dry gasket at the factory. You've already crushed the filter, so don't worry about destroying it completely, which you'll probably end up doing in order to get it off. You are planning on replacing the filter anyway, right ??

It may get a bit messy, but you can drive a large screwdriver through the filter body and then twist it off, or use one of the oil filter wrenches that use a stiff rubber strap; apply it at the base of the filter and heave-ho.

DITTO on driving the big screwdriver thru it and twisting.

You can even take a hammer and chisel to the crimped edge and walk it around an inch or two then spin it off by hand, just be careful not to hit the mounting plate.

Agreed it was a dry factory install and it is just plain stuck.

For the life of me I can't understand why they have to put them on so tight at the factory for any brand. In most cases you turn till the filter touches the rubber and then 1/2- 1 turn is plenty.

I have yet to fail with a pair of chain vise grips. The kind where you wrap a bicycle-style chain around it and tighten it up. Makes a mess of the filter, but who gives a hoot?

Mine was WICKED tight on a 1000 hour tractor. Hopefully it wasn't the factory filter, but who knows? It couldn't defeat a Wolverine. (2010-2012)

:ditto:

I use the same.
**************

I have a pair of the same--I think I've only had to use them once over the years---

Do put a nice coat of oil around the end gasket as you install the new filter.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I'm gonna get some of those tools u guys mentioned. I'll try some today and see what happens. Seems like every first oil change from a brand new car/truck/tractor has this prb. Like they are laughing at the factory when they tighten these things on saying "good luck with that one"

With the strap style filter wrenches, get as close to the mounting surface as possible before applying pressure. Filter can't crush as easily there, so, you get much more pressure/leverage to get it to turn.

I have a chain wrench as well, for those truly stubborn ones. Haven't found one yet that it wouldn't take off...... :D

Something at the Deere plant must have made the filter installer angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

I have collected a pretty good assortment of different filter wrenches over the years... Some mechanical gear driven thing that fits right on a 3/8 ratchet, rubber strap wrenches, big channellox, oil filter style channelox, etc. The channelox style oil filter wrench made its way into the utility drawer in the kitchen. Best. Jar. Opener. EVER!!!
