I have a hydraulic hose with a pinhole in it so I'm looking for a replacement. It's Ariens p/n 03008700 (new number style). It's a 3/8" line about 18" long. Any suggestions on a good place to buy one? There's a Mills' Fleet Farm nearby that I love, but a) will they likely have this and b) how's the quality of hoses from stores like this? Will the coupling on the end of the hose transfer to the new one, or do I need to buy one from Ariens with the coupling? I'm not an OEM-only type person, but I don't want to do this again in a few months.

On a related note, do you cold winter/hot summer guys do anything special with your hydro oil seasonally? Ariens suggests 30wt over 80degF (which is most all the summer here) but I plan on snow blowing with it this winter (down to -15degF or more!). Do you change oil every year?

On another related note, any winter prep tips for keeping my tractor running well when it's below zero outside?
thanks again -

Here's what I would do--and I have worked in a construction/shop environment for a lot of years...there are a LOT of different hyd. fittings--both ends--some even proprietary to one manufacturer.:dunno:

Ok--take off the old hose--Block off both ports left on the tractor...so no dirt insects, such will get in. Take that hose (after you drain it and clean it off)--to a nearby hydraulic supply house or even good sized NAPA. A good hydraulic 'man' will let you know in a few seconds=--yes or no.
Than go from there--in the end--it'll be quicker and cost less money and less headache, unless you really have something special. Don't make this harder than it is--and while at it--look at other hoses while it's off--if one bit the dust--others may be going , also.

Good luck--this is just my experience from many--other's may say different.

I use what the manufacturer recommends. In my case LowViscosity Hydro oil. I will change the oil at the recommended interval. 500 hours IIRC. Nothing special for minus 20 days they are stored in a barn and have OEM block heaters. I didn't do anything special for my gas tractors when I had them just kept them well maintained.

I have had NAPA make my hoses for the last few years the ends are available but expensive but what isn't on an Ariens still NAPA has been 40 to 50 % under Ariens pricing. The hose has a higher pressure rating and are more flexible than the originals. I do not change hydro oil wt for the winter and change the filter every two years about 250 hours and oil at 500 hours. I use 30 wt. engine oil as per the Ariens manual. I change to 10-30 engine oil in the fall as temperature can drop to 0 F and is much easier to start. Also make sure you use engine oil with a high zinc content to lubricate the cam and lifters.

Just got back from NAPA with the new hose. The guy test fit the fittings to be sure they fit and charged me $29. I'll probably put it on in the next day or two. Thanks for the advice.

I ran into that on my GT19 and when I replaced the holey one, not 5 minutes after putting the new hose on and bleeding out the air/topping off the fluid, another one blew.... so I took off all 6 remaining hoses and had a buddy make me up new ones.
(this unit has power steering that's why so many hoses)

Call Surplus Supply, that hose is about $10.00, they ship fast, my two cents
I haven't seen any shippers who can get a hose to you in the same afternoon as it fails. From time of failure to back in operation in less than an hour for me with using a local supplier. That's worth an extra few dollars to me over waiting 2 or 3 days while the snow keeps piling up.

The other thing is that the hoses on GTs are custom length. The hoses from Surplus Supply are standard lengths and may not fit in the available space without interference with rotating parts. You won't save anything if you have to replace the hose a second time because the first one was rubbing on the drive shaft.
