Hydraulic articulated steering?

3798 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Alan_Heist
I'm starting to collect parts and ideas to build a 4WD articulated Case tractor.

My question involves the steering of the unit. Are 2 hydraulic cylinders needed or can it be done with 1?

I'm thinking if using 1, it would need to be stronger that 2, but it would probably be more cost benefit to buy 1 slightly stronger cylinder than 2 lighter duty cylinders.

However, I'm wondering if there are other disadvantages to only using 1.

Thanks!

Look into older forklift trucks...
Some have a hydraulic motor to turn the wheels...
Some have one cly....
If you gear it down you wont need power...
I built my tractor using one dual acting cylinder for the articulated steering. The only disadvantage to using only one cylinder is the difference in the force the cylinder can exert extending vs. retracting due to the rod diameter. My steering cylinder rod diameter is relatively small and I can't notice any difference in the steering force in one direction vs. the other.

It will also turn faster in one direction, again due to the rod occupying volume as the cylinder retracts. A smaller rod will make that less noticeable.

Kbeitz... not sure what your reference to gearing it down was in reference to, please enlighten me.

This will be for a center articulated 4WD tractor with a joint in the center of the machine that allows it to turn....

Wayne... I like your tractor, mine will be smaller, more along the lines of shenninger's articingercase, but a little different. Nice new paint job BTW.:thThumbsU
