Husqvarna PZT60 with B&S Vanguard EFI - Hard Start

All,

Have had this machine since Oct 2017 and it gets heavy use. I do not remember when this problem started but here is what happens.

Assumptions before reading - All safety mechanisms are in place and operating so as to NOT prevent starting :)

When I turn the key it will click (when cold) and I have to turn the key back and forth a few time then it starts no problem.

If I have been mowing a while and turn the engine off then back on, it doesn't exhibit the problem.

Any pointers on where to look or how to diagnosis this?

Thanks

Spoke to my local Husqvarna dealer and he said it's a common problem, they have replaced starters and it resolves for a time, then goes back to the problem again.

He suggested a 340 CCA battery, it shipped with a 230 cca

any thoughts

Clarify:

Does the click happen when you try to “Start”? A larger CCA battery may help. You can find out by jumping the battery with a starting aid (auxiliary battery). If it still has problems, there’s another problem. I have a friend with a Craftsman that won’t start cold. I have to rotate the engine by hand to release cylinder pressure so the engine can be rotating before it hits a compression stroke. Sometimes it takes several tries. It’s likely the pressure relief or cable connections to the starter or ground.

A warm engine will always start easier than when cold.

Good idea on using a parallel battery I will give that a shot

Pressure relief valve would make sense if I could find it :)

I hear from other MTF members that when starting their EFI engines when cold, cycling the key on-off-on will make their Deere X7xx EFI start easier/more often the first start. Likely the computer remembers it didn’t start the first time the ignition switch is turned on and software likely adjusts amount of fuel injected.

You might want to Check and clean ground cable where it mounts to frame before you get a battery. Another way to test ground is to use negative side of jumper cable to neg of battery and and to a good ground on engine block or frame. This will give another ground path if a poor ground is causing the problem. Also check voltage drop across solenoid when trying to crank

It's not a click like most are thinking.. you know the type, your turn your car on and get a dead click.. this is like it clicks to start and something stops it.

Spoke to dealer and he said they have had complains on this whether it's the vanguard motor or Kohler, etc.

He said they have replaced starter motors and the problems goes away for a short time then comes back..

I did try the battery (dual) and it was still the same

Guess it's something I have to live with...
