I purchased an older Huskee (MTD) Heavy Duty Series cheap. The reason it was being sold was that the motor mount bolts were broken off in the engine case. It had new tires on it that I was going to use on another Lawn mower. When I got home and looked it over it seems to be in fairly good condition so I think I am going to try and save it.

I hope to use an easy out to get the old bolts out. I have never had much luck with that in the past so I want to have an alternate plan. It is a Tecumseh 16.5 HP motor. Looks like parts are getting hard to come by so I am thinking of just putting a more readily available BS or Kohler in it. Does anyone know if another engine will bolt right in without modification? I am wondering about drive belts and wiring?

Thanks.

Just a thought but it would probably be easier to just drill out the old bolts and use nuts and bolts to reinstall the engine, should be no problem if you have a small drill press or just take the engine base to a machine shop and have them drill them out.

That was my original thought. Turns out only one of the mounts has a bolt that runs through an ear that could be drilled out. The other three are actually threaded holes in the bottem of the engine case and do not go all the way through.

We have pretty good luck welding a nut on to remove broken off bolts. If they broke because they were loose they shouldn't come out to hard, if they where twisted off because of being rusted/corroded it may take a few tries. The heating and cooling from welding on the bolt also helps to loosen it. Also if you weld a nut on and then spray it with non-flammable :) penetrating oil the heat helps to work it in and loosen it. Some times you can get a better weld on the bolt by welding a washer on first and then a nut.

I will have to keep that trick in mind for future reference. These bolts are broken off inside the holes. It does look like they had worked loose before they broke so hopefully they may come out fairly easy.
