How do you remove all the oil and dirt from a small engine so you can paint it? Also, how do you get rid of the current paint?

The engine needs work so it is all apart and the pieces can be cleaned individually.

I use brake clean and a blow gun for degreasing. It works really well as it evaporates quickly and leaves the surface clean and ready for paint. As for paint removal I usually just sand it down as best I can and use a good primer before painting.

If im doing a total paint, I assemble the block, seal it up, spray it heavily with tal-strip, then power wash it..blow it dry, and paint the block.

Sheetmetal I also strip, power wash, and paint.

Thank you, those sound reasonable. And closing it up before cleaning should help keep crud out of the interior passages.

First I will make sure it starts before painting. :)

Like Red said only I use a different unmentionable solvent. I would go light on painting heat transfer surfaces such as head and block cooling fins.
