I have one on my Billygoat leaf vacuum. Only had it for two years, but it seems like I don't see any of these engines around on anything.

I know they are the same block pretty much as the smaller engines, but I never see an 8hp, or if I do it is off of a snowblower.

This is a representative picture and not the exact one I have. Same model and set up, but 8hp and green.

Rebuild them, parts are plentiful and cheap, and a 0.020" overbore (around here a competent machine shop will do that for $40.00) will make it like a brand new one again and good for another 40 years. Easiest engines on earth to rebuild, Briggs really got it right with the 8 I/C.

I still see them pretty often around here on old snowblowers and tillers, generators, some garden tractors...

I wouldn't say they are "rare",more like "you dont see them as often as you used too,but they are still "popular"...

It seems things come around in batches here--for years you wont see a particular engine much, then all of a sudden you'll see a bunch of them on things for sale on CL,at swap meets and flea markets,or on scrapped items..

Sears Suburbans were real scarce here for a long time, then it seemed a bunch of them came out of hiding all of a sudden..maybe the original owners who hung onto them passed on,and they were finally brought out of those sheds, garages and barns?..who knows..

I think they are good engines, though they always have the usual issues with the starter clutches seizing up and ripping out the recoil rope ,and the Flo-Jet carbs can be a pain sometimes, not the easiest to take apart and work on..but I've had more good ones than bad..

I have a newer Briggs 8HP off a Craftsman shredder/chipper ,but it has the cursed tapered crankshaft,it runs and looks new too of course, since its useless for anything but what it came on or maybe a generator...not sure if I feel like spending money to make a adapter so it can be used with a pulley on one of my tractors or not..
