So you have a B&S engine with a coil.. The coil's + terminal needs 12V+ from the run circuit (key on power). The coil's -(neg) terminal will hook to the points/ condenser on the side of the engine.
*if it has points that is.. A picture could help us help you more also.. :dunno:

I will get some pictures in the morning
the mower runs good but I got to take a pair of pliers
and pull the spark plug cable to stop the engine

Ok then that is the one you ground to kill the engine were does the one you have grounded come from

so the wire from the coil would go to the switch also and when you hit the switch it would ground the coil and KILL the engine

the switch does need to be normally open meaning no contact when not pushed on switched

ok then the switch is normally closed which means it is grounding the coil if you remove the wire you have grounded will it start

Ok so the switch you need is a normally open switch not normally closed
normally open (no contact between wires) (normally closed contact between wires)
you do not need the coil grounded until you want to shut the engine off that is why the switch you have is not working
