Hello. I am in the process of trying to purchase a 1995 Yardman 998. It seems to be in good shape from the pics. It comes with a 50" deck, 54" blade, tire chains and weights. Are these decent tractors? It has a 18HP Vanguard that the owner claims as having around 30 hours on it. What would be a comparable John Deere model size wise? I cut about 5 acers of grass a week and I started the season with a JD LA130, but it was killing the machine. I sold it and bought a commercial Gravely Zero turn but am looking for a spare tractor to cut grass and also have a plow for winter, plus I just like to have a tractor in the garage. Any info or input is appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Brian.

Modern John Deere equivalent? Maybe the x500. I think but am not certain the 998 has a limited slip rear axle. Pretty decent tractor really.

Thanks for the info. Well I did make the purchase. I did notice that the axles are worn. I thought that the bushings might be worn but once I removed the front wheels I found that the axles are shot. Are there any recomendations for used parts for these? I checked ebay but none to be found for my application. Thanks.

Put an add in the For Sale section. "Wanted to Buy" Include picture of what you need and model / serial numbers of the machine. Also chech with MTD for new parts, never know. Good luck!
