I have enjoyed the service of my JD345 ('98), but the hood and attachments of the hood are all broken. I was able to JB Weld some parts over the last five years, but it's been a losing battle. Last week, the entire hood went bad, with a multitude of breaks everywhere.

It there a place that molds or creates hoods for the older JD tractors......???

Why not go down to a JD dealer and just buy one or check E-Bay They are still available for the 96 LX series

Anyone know what it would cost to have one fabricated out of metal? You know., like it should have been in the first place? For what they want for a plastic one it might be worthwhile instead out buying another plastic one that will be junk in a couple years again. I'm going commando but would by a new one if I had some expectation of it lasting.

Slongholio a custom metal hood that worked so the engine still cooled would probably cost twice what the plastic one does. Roger
Thanks for the feedback.

Maybe it's just the 345s then. The forum and web are full of instances and even cragslist "hood has the usual cracks".

I'd buy a metal one even if it cost twice as much, since I know I won't have to buy another one down the road. On the other hand - adding $800 to the price of a new tractor from the dealer would probably have scared a lot of people away.

I'm going to check with my cousin next time I'm down his way, he's a life long mechanic and fabricator. Maybe depending on how much it would cost, can set up a run and sell the extras. Looks like this tractor will last me forever, after 13 years only have a little over 500 hours. I've seen some for sale with upwards of 2,000 hours on them. And this on is running like new since I replaced the carb.

Or if anyone here want's to quote me one. I see member of the month built a sweet looking rig - but wasn't a 345.

But I'll go continue going commando before I pony up $400 for another plastic one.

slongholio I do agree the 325, 345 series etc. did have a worse than average breakage.
I think that the problem with a steel hood would be, like most everything else, the cost of the FIRST one. after that they would cost less.
If you look back in time the 318.s etc. and old 100 series had fiberglass hood. Strong and easy fix and repaint able. ( my guess cost to JD) ended them.
