Homelite XL12, should I waste my time in getting this thing running? It has sat in a horse stall for years. Supposedly it was dropped in water before then, but ran after that. :dunno:
I got it cleaned up, everything moves (has a small oil leak so it was oil covered), old fuel still in it. Oil pump works. Carb looks clean. Has compression, but won't run, even if put fuel directly in the spark plug port. Tried new plug, nothing. Needs a new (rubber) fuel line. Buttoned it up, put it under the antique for safe keeping for another day. Another unfinished project.

They are nice saws for the use around the yard. I wouldn't even frown on useing it to cut winter fire wood.

The carb probably needs a total tear down cleaning, should check for spark to see if you have any.

Check out the guys at arborsite.com. They are very helpfull and a few even collect homealite saws. May be a sourse to off load it if you don't want it.

those were the good homelite days. Before I started working on it I would pull off the muffler and check the piston and cylinder out. Any scoring at all and I wouldn't bother with it.

And did you test the coil or i guess points on that saw. you need to see if the plug is actually sparking. That would be the second deal breaker.

Piston looks good, has good comprression.
Pulled the flywheel, found the points, freed them up due to not being used for awhile, cleand and reset. Slapped it all back together, nothing. Dead. New plug, too.
Maybe I can swap the mag from this XL12 with the other XL12 I got (same price).
Pulled that flywheel, different mag setup, different points, too.
Both saws sitting are in the back of the pickup waiting for some other time that I have nothng to do.

if your not getting spark then I would sell both on ebay for what I could get but thats me and I have no time these days. .
I'm watching one on ebay right now out f curiosity. if you have a super xl12 then thats even better resale. People sell parts off those all the time too. You may want to consider that as well.

if you are inclined to fix it you might be able to get an ignition module
Here is the address of one on ebay for $29. I saw some points for much less.
