I have been wanting an enclosed hitch hauler for gas runs. I hate having to put the cans inside the van and I would never use the Durango no matter what. Last Saturday this tool box showed up on FB for $65 and I was lucky enough to be first. Picked it up Sunday and started cogitating and looking at my raw materials for the base.

A few months back I scored a free weight machine off CL that has a lot of nice 2" square tubing with app .080" wall thickness. I found a couple of sections that I could use and got to work. These sections have some very thick powdercoating which was a pitn to scrape off for welding. I also cut the 2 tabs off another part of the weight machine frame. Saved a good bit of work making them from scratch. I drilled the retaining pin hole on the milling machine.

Now for the embarrassing part. I didn't do enough thinking while cutting, welding and drilling and ended up with the box on backwards :tango_face_crying::tango_face_surprise So I cut the tabs back off and turned the box around and drilled 4 new holes and welded the tabs back on ….. DOH !!!! :tango_face_devil: It's all part of being human I guess :tango_face_grin: The net result is a lost hour and 4 extra holes to plug. Probably use Christmas trees from the autobody section of the parts store.

Today's high was 70ish which we probably won't see again this year so I definitely needed to get the welds and cut ends painted TODAY !! I let the frame and the paint can set in the sun for a couple of hours and about 11 I laid on the paint. Then the wife came home in the Durango and I opened the hood and set the frame above the motor and then let the hood down all I could. Voila !!! Oven baked paint !!! I really does do the trick. Then after my nap :tango_face_angel: I bolted the box onto the base and ta da !! Done.

The 'wheels' are pulleys off the weight machine. I used existing holes. The wheels allow me to roll the thing around instead of having to strain to lift it. I have an old neck injury and this is just the sort of lift that really hammers me. With the wheels I can just roll it to the hitch, set the insert section onto the receiver and then have an easy lift and slide. I do need a positive stop to align the pin holes. The access to the pin is not great but that's the way it goes.

I added a rubber bumper to the 'back' of the box so I can set it upright and not be abusing the edge of the lid and another preexisting weight machine rubber bumper works good for setting it upright and not scratching the finish.

Now here is a question. Does everybody read all this or just look at the pics ? If no one cares about all the story of the project I can just post pics.

Hopefully the popo don't zap me for not being able to see the tag !! That would just be my luck.

Read it all..... When it is spaced, as you have done, there is no problem.

When people post endless paragraphs of typing I don't read them..... too hard on the eyes..... too hard to follow and loose interest.

Got a real chuckle as I scrolled down thru the pics and got to the fourth one.

Thought for a second you were towing it to the corner gas station on those little wheels.:tango_face_devil:

I put our gas cans in tupperware tubs when I have to haul them inside the back of the Ford Escape. So far no spills or leaks.

Unfortunately I have heard of someone being ticketed for a similar rack blocking the rear plate.

I read the entire post,I enjoy reading the details of a build and how you used recycled materials to make that carrier..came out very well in my opinion..

I'd say you'd ward off getting a ticket if you got a universal license plate holder and a plate light and mounted it on the read door of the van...it'll cost less than the citation or going to court to fight it would..around here an obstructed plate or no plate light are probably the #1 and #2 reasons cops pull people over,that and an expired or no inspection sticker,or loud exhaust,or no seat belt being used !..

I will probably add some plastic push nuts onto the box and move the license plate. Only take a minute or 2.

Looks great, and awesome idea! I've had a gas can flip over and leak in the back of an Explorer. Not good...

From then on, I always tie them down with a bungee, which has worked so far, but I'm really liking your idea a lot more!!!

I found a used Harbor Freight 42"x48" trailer for very cheap. I use that when I go for gas, which I buy 20 gallons at a time (5-Gal cans x 4). It also works better as a lawn trailer than the other two I have.

My wife named it "Son Of Trailer". :tango_face_grin:

Very nice, but I really don't want to register any more vehicles. Just had to renew my RV, utility trailer and boat trailer. Then there's my truck, and my wife pays for her own car.

lol ...I'm not far from Bartley trailers in Silver Spring, MD. I like their trailers but if I need one I always rent a trailer down at Home Depot near me. It's so inexpensive and convenient.

I take a 5 gal can and two 2.5 gallon cans. I only put 4 gal in the 5 can and 2 gal each in the others for a total of 8 gal. This lasts me about 2 months.

I once borrowed a home made cargo carrier that a friend built,he made it so it would tilt down and you could drive a motorcycle or tractor up on it without ramps..

I used it to haul my Yard-Man tractor around,I used to have to mow an uncles lawn in another town years ago,and soon found it to be a real chore to get it there and back--my pickup's stepside bed was too narrow to let the tractor fit on it with the deck on it,once I tried putting planks and plywood on top of the bed rails and drive the tractor up on top of the bed,that was VERY scary and top heavy,and loading and unloading it at my uncles house was difficult,as he only had one spot on the side of the street with enough of a ditch to back my truck into,and have the loading ramps more level..it was risky,cars would fly around a bad curve and my truck would stick out in the street a few feet..:eek:..

The cargo carrier worked great,with one exception..with a 500 lb tractor hanging off the back of the truck,the rear springs would sag enough to let the cargo carrier sit only 6" off the ground,if that..

I had to be careful going up steep inclines,driveways,or store entrances with it,because it would dig into the asphalt and drag,a few times I almost got hung up,when it hit bottom,took the weight off the rear tires,and I had to stop due to an oncoming car--it refused to move again,my tires just smoked!..
I had to get out and lock my hubs and use 4wd to get the thing moving again!..a few heavy duty casters would solve that issue though..

But other than that,I felt it was a better way to transport a tractor than trying to drive it up into the bed..the truck didn't handle too well with so much tail weight though--I avoided using interstates with the tractor on the back,I stuck to the back roads..
I feared someone would rear end me too,with the distracted drivers around here tailgating all the time..

Robert has a good point, don't get rear-ended with full cans back there, you'll look like a 70s Pinto!

Very nice project and I liked the way you used what you had on hand. I never throw away extra wood, pipe, wire, etc. as you never know when you will need it. I did read your entire post. :) This is what you need for a positive stop for the hitch. I have this on a Snowsport Plow on the front of my vehicle. Makes it very nice just to slide it in and slap in the pin!! Bill
