I know many here cut, split their own firewood ..

How BIG is TOO BIG ? For you to handle ?

Some are 48" the larger ones had to be ripped in half

I was just given a crap load of fresh cut Red Oak rounds. BUT I had to go pick them up and haul them home. (About 10 miles)

I've had a few friends tell me i was NUTS for taking this stuff .. But it was FREE and I bet I'll get 5 - 6 cords out of it all once its split and stacked. I got 6 - 5 X 10 trailer loads, on my 6 K LB Equipment Trailer

Would you take these pieces for free ?

Uhh.. I hate you.. have fun buddy.. actually i'm just jealous of your wood..
Oh ya, I would take them!!!!!

How are you planing to move them??
I don't heat exclusively with wood, but I'd be all over that load Ken. Besides, it's a great workout for your loader. :fing32:

Ken, my wood stove will take pieces cut to 36 inches in length. I normally cut them to normal firewood length though so that my wife can load them in the stove if I'm not home.
You made out like a bandit Ken! I'd be all over those too. The chain saw with quarter those up beautifully and then you're golden running them through the splitter.

Very nice! :fing32:

:dunno: really... your not going to say anything.. :dunno: what a let down.. You gotta know i left that as a loaded reply just for you buddy.. :banghead3 and not a single comment..

Ken.. i'm not sure if my splitter would pop those open.. its only a 18 ton.. But my maul and or wedge and sledge hammer would.. If only i could get a load on my gooseneck like that.. I will just keep on stuffing spruce in my stove. One day ill get a stand of tamarack as its as close to hard wood as we get here.. Are you going to keep track of the wood you get out of these rounds? Lets see some wood pile pics... :thThumbsU

Good wood Ken! Merry Christmas Gerald, maybe we will take advantage of the opening after the Holidays! :trink39:
i'd have taken them too. i rent a 28 ton splitter when i get wood like that, the biggest rounds i've had were about 36" across though, i don't even quarter them with the chainsaw, i just walk them into the jaws of the vertical splitter and let it do the work.
New York has declared war on the emerald ash borer and is cutting every ash tree on public land.. Then they are shredding the wood!! :crybaby: :crybaby:
I usually let 36" be the limit for me based on loading and unloading, not splitting. That all looks like nice straight grained oak, and should split easily. I'd guess if you can set a splitter up level, but on sloping ground so you can roll those rounds across a pair of planks from the uphill side to the ram, you wouldn't need to noodle them into quarters.

If you have any problems, I'm not far across the tpk bridge, just run them over. You can eat Christmas cookies, I'll unload and split them.

Doing the same inside Ottawa (Ontario) city limits.
Come on Ken.. where is the picture or pictures of the stack of fire wood..
nice load of wood. i am still cleaning up the tops on my land and should defiantly have wood for 3 years easy. i prefer the red oak myself some of the best burning wood there is of course with the exception of locust .
You are much braver than me!

I pass on sizes like that all the time. It's all over the place around here, being thrown away at the curbside.

I decided a while ago that hurting my back on the big stuff just isn't worth it. So I stick to the <18" diameter pieces, and prefer the <12" stuff in particular. Very manageable, and only needs 1-3 splits.

If I had more space, and a SCUT to help with lifting/moving/etc, I would love to be set up for this size. You can accumulate a lot of wood in a hurry with pieces that size. Have fun!

P.S. Is it definitely oak? It almost looks like silver maple in the photos.

I take all of the free firewood I can get. Use it either in the fireplace or when we go camping.
