That is a good looking line up of 19 inch mowers Scott. Bill
Thanks for the information, very helpful. I think I will keep the ratio 16:1. Couple other questions for your expertise. First, this lawn boy I'm pretty sure was purchased, possibly mid 1960's. While much of the stickers on the engine are still in tact, like OMC, starting instructions, etc., most everything else has faded away. Is there anyway to tell what year this thing might actually be? Second, it has been in storage for 5+ years and I'd like to know what you would recommend I should do to initially start it again. I'm going to put a new spark plug in it, clean the air filter, and then of course fresh gas mix, but is there anything else you would recommend just due to it sitting for so long? It was stored inside so it wasn't exposed to any weather.Hi and welcome to the forum. In general the cutoff from 16:1 to 32:1 came around 1970. Some Lawnboy enthusiasts have converted their older 16:1 Lawnboys to 32:1 by installing the 2 ring piston and appropriate connecting rod. You can always remove the muffler which is a good idea anyway to check the ports for carbon and see if it has 3 rings or 2 rings.
I have been using the Lawnboy oil, originally in an 8 ounce can and now in the 8 ounce bottle, for almost 40 years. Never had an engine failure. There will be many suggestions on brands and mix ratios but I have stuck with what has worked for me. Again, welcome!! Bill
You should have a plate on the back of the mower, it'll be circular and riveted onto the deck. It should have the model and serial number. Thanks for the information, very helpful. Thanks, very helpful and I'll follow your recommendations. As for the plate that's riveted on the deck, I know exactly what you're talking about. It's circular and had the number 19 for mower size and then the model number. Unfortunately, that is completely gone, it's only a shiny piece of silver now! LOL. Not to worry though, I think by doing what you suggested, and using the LawnBoy 2cycle oil, I should be fine. I'll let ya know how it turns out. Appreciate all the advice. You should have a plate on the back of the mower, it'll be circular and riveted onto the deck. It should have the model and serial number.
After looking at that little circle that is riveted to the deck, I found the model number, it's a 5232 which indicates it's a '64. Just got back from finding a spark plug, new air filter, and I ordered new points for it. The odd thing is, the points are still available but the condenser isn't. I'll have to do some searching online I guess. Figured I'd give it a good tune-up with these parts. Looks like I'll have to order the 2 cycle Lawn Boy oil as no one carries it around where I live. The quest continues!Yes post a pic! We love pics around here. The 63 was a unique year for D-400s, so it should be easy to ID that mower.
Welcome to the forum!
Thanks Scott, I'll check that stuff out on ebay. I was able to order points from one of the local dealers that use to sell Lawn Boys and should have them late next week. They also had a foam air breather that they just gave to me as it was so old. I think that will be fine because it was kept moist with a little oil in it and it's very pliable. The old one, when I took it out pretty much disintegrated so lucky I have this one. I wont' have time for a few days to work on this but when I do I'll let you know about the head bolts. I have confirmed though that it is a model 5232, so that was half the battle. More to come.Hello Jim
