First off hello from a new guy. I couldn't find anything in my search on this so here is my question. I purchased my first Yanmar yesterday and the hood says YM240. Well after checking the numbers, I have a hood that says YM240 with a 2TR20AX under it and a tranny that says YM1600-6156 and a fender that says YM1600 839. Any idea what I really have here? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Bob,

I think you're OK. The 2TR20XXX- is the correct engine series for the YM2000 and the YM240. The number on the transmission and fender usually are factory specific for the model's that relate to lot numbers and the series that were run from certain dates (although not year dates). And, don't feel all alone ;). Yanmar tractor of Japan has run that crazy number system for around 40 years.

The YM2000/240 tractors have a cast in model and serial number on the left side of the transmission case just in front of where the axle mounts. There is a photo here where you can see a picture of a machine I have whose serial plate was ground down. In that thread LMTC mentions he has heard of a YM2000 engine being put in a YM1900 or 1600 chassis. Is your number actually cast into the chassis?

A chassis # that starts with YM1600 IS A YM1600. Period. This is how the reconners [picture of threaded wood-fastening device here] the buying public. If you bought parts for the chassis/transmission for a YM2000 they would fit ONLY if the 1600 happens to share that part with a 2000. This only further points out the importance of integrity in the seller. The fact that the more and more of the buying public chose price over this integrity in the past 8-10 years is a major factor in why tractors are no longer profitable for us....or Ernie...or others like us. Anyone can put any decal they want on a hood...that don't make it so. I've beat this drum for a decade now. Chassis #, engine #, dealer integrity. The information is available if one is willing to take the time to read the forums.

Well I did not find this forum until after I bought the tractor. The sale was from a private party selling it for his mother after his father died so have to guess the father did not know it either as he bought a manual for a 240. I guess I have a " Psycho Billy" Yanmar with a 24hp engine.
