I need some help in choosing the correct rough cut PTO mower for my IH 404 tractor.
I have been using the McCormick IH-100 "Balanced Mower" sickle bar for years, but I need something that will just rough cut grassy fields relatively cleanly. The sickle is great...but I would like something quicker to setup and use frequently.

This is the IH404 tractor and my existing mower below.
Rated at 35-40 HP depending how you measure it and where you read it.
PTO output is rated 38 HP in my original IH book.

What is the best choice for a rough cut mower for 40HP ?
....5 foot....6 foot???

All thoughts / help appreciated. :tee:

I managed to figure it out myself and I am posting this for reference for others.

The rule of thumb for medium duty cutting: (grassy, weedy, small amount of brush)
approx. 6HP per foot of width for a "rough cut" mower.

So....
6HP x 6ft mower...36HP tractor

Considering the IH404 is 40HP.....I have HP to spare. :fing32:

(Those seeking to cut heavy duty brush 2" thick may want to go with 7-8 HP per foot as the rule)
