My name is Angie. I live in rural Wisconsin. A year or so ago, my Dad died (old age) and I inherited his Sears SS/18 garden tractor and a showblower attachment and a plow attachment. I have gotten the old tractor running well, but not perfect.

As I find most of the parts are NLA from Sears, as Roper is out of business, I am scouring the net for parts and information. I am sure Dad never threw anything away, but to date, Mom and I have not found the original owners manuals. Until then I have used a website with a lot of free Sears manuals to get a few pieces of info, and parts lists.

SS 18 tractor is a 1977 917.25961
Mower deck is a 917.253260 (probably also a 1977 model)
Snow blower is a 842.260032 (unknown year)
Dozer Blade is a 917.25331 (unknown year)

Along with attachments I also got rear wheel weights, and rear tire chains for this tractor. I also got a Rubbermaid manufactured Craftsman branded dump trailer, but it has no Sears parts tag so I can't tell you what it is exactly.

Yesterday I discovered Dad's apparent lack of maintenance and cleaning of the 48" mower deck, and found the tensioner spring for the belt is broken in half. (I have yet to find a replacement) I also discovered 36 years of old grease and dirt under the belt cover, and a lot of rust and frozen bolts (I will get those at a local hardware store)

So that's my story. Personally I'm a 57 year old single woman with 2 grown children not at home. I'm a bit of a mechanic, being raised by a Dad who liked
to wrench his own cars and equipment. I do it now because it's cheaper than taking it to a mechanic, and because I like it. In my younger (thinner!) years I built custom street motorcycles out of old metric bikes, but that is all behind me now (I still ride an old Suzuki Intruder in the summer time).

I hope I can learn a lot here, and maybe help out when and if I discover any parts that are hard to find :)

Thanks stanley55 :)

One thing I found out about this old tractor (I call it "Grandad") is that it likes to eat starter solenoids. After I first got it running, it stopped starting with the key, so I had to jump the solenoid lugs to start it. I replced it with a cheap "garden tractor" solenoid from a local auto parts store, and it died in about 2 days. When I can afford it, I'll find and install a heavy duty early ford solenoid (it came with one from Roper).

Other than that, and one missing part for the dozer blade, I have almost everything working. It's just the mower deck that has me upset at the moment. Without the idler/tensioner spring it's not going to work. I may have to improvise somehow, because I don't give up easily! LOL
