Ok, so I took the carb partially apart today and cleaned it up as best I could. Symptoms still remain.
Symptoms:
Cuts out at high rev rpm's, surges etc. the interesting part is it does not do it under load (ie when the deck is engaged) only when driving along at WOT and the hydro is at full speed, when at WOT and hydro at mid speed or less no surges or cutouts.

Any insights?

mine is doing something similar. I hadn't got around to cleaning the carb yet.

I was going to check the intake for leaks if the carb cleaning doent fix it.

If it ain't fuel, its timing.

The magnets can get rusted over and the magneto can mis-read the timing marks. Also, the spacing between the magneto and flywheel can be adjusted.

At least on some of the engines.

I had an older opposed twin kohler on my GT6000 before I swapped it out for a Vtwin and it acted exactly as describe.....carb rebuild fixed it. I left it in a parts washer a while. there's chance you got a piece of dirt ya can't to...let er soak in a good solvent and spray the crap out of it with some powerful brake and/or carb cleaner....i personally prefer brake cleaner.
