GT275 not shutting off

Hello,

I was doing some work on a GT275. It was not getting fuel into the cylinder, but the fuel was in the carb bowl and all the jets were cleaned thoroughly. I ended up figuring out that the fuel shutoff solenoid is (I think) malfunctioning in some way. So, I replaced the solenoid with a bolt, and it started up and ran well, with the exception of the RPMs puttering down occasionally at rabbit setting on the throttle.

My main issue, now, is that when I turn the key to the off position, the tractor keeps running.

Could this be due to some circuit not operating the way it should because I disconnected the fuel solenoid? Is the electric board where the key ignition connects to bad?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

What did you do with the wire that used to go to the solenoid?...Did you just leave it hanging...or did you cut it off?

Also what happens if you leave the PTO on and get up out of seat...does it continue to run or shut off then?
You can also check the solenoid by running a piece of wire from positive terminal to the point at which the wire you disconnected was formerly attached....and then touch the solenoid assembly to the chassis...or the negative pole on the battery..if it clicks and you see the end of the piston move it is ok...if no reaction, then it is shot

If you are going to continue to run it without the solenoid you should put a shut off valve in the fuel line and use it or you will flood the oil with gasoline

Do you mean to say it keeps running smoothly as if it's getting spark OR does it diesel and then die? Are you getting the RPM's down for several seconds before you turn off the ignition?
Hello,

Sorry for the late response, busy week I had.

The update is: the tractor runs good on all throttle levels and starts good, but it does not shut off when the key is turned to the off position. As for the wire that was previously connected to the fuel solenoid, I left it hanging. The battery light is also on, if that helps. What options do i have moving forward?

Thank you

Sounds like the ignition is messed up at the key. Otherwise, how is it getting spark????
What happens when you get out of operator seat with the PTO running?...Does it still continue to run?

Have you traced the kill wire from the coil to make sure it did not somehow become disconnected, therefore losing the ground that would shut it down?

Did you put a shut off valve in the fuel line? ...if you answer these questions we can all make an educated assessment of your problem

The safety for the seat is bypassed. I've pulled the wires out and used a wire nut to connect them together. I thought that may have been an issue, so I just went out and tried to start it, take the wires apart and tap them together and seperate them again. I did this both while the pto was on AND when it was off - in both scenarios, the tractor kept running without skipping a beat.

I have not installed a fuel shut off petcock yet, but I plan to.

I traced a white wire to the coil, and it seems to be snug and undamaged. To me, this seems like an ignition circuit board problem. Thoughts?

It would seem to me that the ignition switch should turn off spark.
Have you traced the kill wire from the coil to make sure it did not somehow become disconnected, therefore losing the ground that would shut it down?
The key in the off position does not stop spark, what it does is completes a circuit from the kill wire from the coil to ground...so if that kill wire is broken free from the point at which it was grounded, there is nothing to shut it off

Also...reconnect the safety from the seat...then sit in the seat and start her up...engage pto...then get out of the seat and see what happens

Also...the discussion of disabling any safety feature is not allowed on this site
