I have a John Deere GT235 with the B & S engine. About 500 hours. When starting from cold...I have to crank and hold choke. I get just a second or so of running. Repeat about 3 or 4 times and then I finally get it fired up. I put in a new fuel filter with no improvement. I'm wondering if the fuel pump is working correctly. The filter has very little fuel visible when it is running. I can see it filling when I have the choke engaged. Wondering if there is any other diagnosis I can do to determine if the fuel pump is working correctly. Thanks!

You can remove the hose from the output side of the pump (to the carb) and attach an extra piece of hose going into a bucket. Crank and see if you get a steady stream after a few seconds. If you do then it's good.

Good fuel flow:
Probably a carb problem, float, needle, etc.

Poor fuel flow:
Could be pump, vacuum hose to pump, vent clogged on gas cap, pickup clogged in tank, fuel line collapsed internally from front to back somewhere.

Most fuel filters appear to be less than 1/2 full. Sorry but have to ask - have you changed spark plugs and if so were they gapped correctly? And, are you sure the gas is good? Air filter? Does your plastic hood have a crack in it? Sorry couldn't resist. Mine does but I really like that GT235.
