Gravely Super Convertible. Carb Question

Hey guys. I just picked up a seemingly decent Super Convertible. It wouldn't start when I looked at it, so I got it for 200 bucks. Seems like a good deal. Got it home and it wanted to start (one puff every now and then) but would not. Checked the timing and it was off. Fixed that and BAM. it runs and seems to run well. Everything works. I also dropped the carb bowl (what an odd setup) and in the process also removed the main jet adjusting needle to clean it. When I removed it, there was tension on it. Not a lot, but it would not turn on it's own. Now after re-installing it, there is none and it actually rotates a bit just from the engine vibration. It is totally freewheeling in there. It is not leaking, but it is wet with gas too. I assume there is an O ring or something that I must have damaged. Anyone got any insight? Thanks! Pics are always fun too!

There is a small fiber packing under the small nut on the main jet adjustment needle. You can try very gently tightening up the small nut but be very careful and only go in very small increments. I would remove the whole needle assembly and soak it in light oil as the packing is most likely dried out from lack of use. Just make sure when you remove and replace the needle assembly that the needle is backed out so you don't crush it against the main jet. I start with an adjustment of 2 turns out and go from there with the engine up to temperature.

The needle assembly is available new from many suppliers and show up on e-bay all the time.

Excellent! I'll give that a shot. The guy I got it from seemed like he took great care of his stuff. He recently had the machine serviced and then parked it for a couple of years. The tank and carb were bone dry and had seemingly been drained so there was no gunk in there. Being bone dry would make sense that the packing would dry out. Thanks for the advice.
