For the tractor in the picture, you would need a roller rest hitch instead of a coupler strut weldment.

The very first carts were made of wood, such as the one on page 18 of this document. One Gravely fan still makes the kits to rebuild wooden carts,

Notice the bend in the tongue of the trailer? That's not damage, it's made that way and it helps with the break-over angle. The wheelbase for a convertible-trailer rig is pretty long, and the hitch is low to the ground. If the tongue were straight, it would bottom out a lot more quickly. I have a Gravely wood cart, and the design works really well. The seat board is effective, and it can haul a LOT of weight.

Best I can tell about that particular cart (I have one too that came from Asheville NC area) is that it was the transition between the wider stance metal cart and the original wood cart. I have a late model and one like the one you have pictured is at my dad's. I really like the narrow cart as it isn't much wider than the tractor with duals and makes a killer combo for going to cut fire wood on the back 40. They are a bit rare as I haven't been able to track the production but for a few years. When I was looking for a cart I found more of the wood and wide metal and only stumbled on to this style.

As others have said, get a roller rest with it if you can. A trailer with out one is next to useless on an L/C or get a coupler strut for use behind Kohler powered tractors.

As usual, these are some excellent answers guys. Im going to look at it tomorrow. Thanks for your information and advice. I talked with the guy today. He had it when he lived up north, and now doesnt need it living down here in a condo. Hopefully we can strike a deal. He said its running and ready for work. Hes been the owner of it since 74. I asked if he bought it new, but he thinks it was about 4 years old when he got it. Ill update tomorrow.
:thanku:

Good luck! That looks like it will be a good cart to use, and with a fresh coat of paint, will be like-new. I'd trust it to last a lot longer than almost anything you can get new today.
Do you think the price is fair On that whole package?
Yes.

If I were in the area and weren't trying to recover from the ravages of G.A.S. I'd be all over it. In this area a cart alone will be 150, a servicable tractor with brush hog, sickle bar, and snow blade would likely bring 3-400.

Good luck, and :wwp:

I think that is a good price anywhere.
If you do pick it up would you mind getting dimensions on the "GRAVELY" on the side. Mine was sadly repainted with a brush by a previous owner...I would like to get some graphics cut that match the original height, etc. and be able to place them correctly on the side.
Well Jimmy, I'm sorry to say I won't be able to provide you any dimensions yet. I got called into work this evening so I had to cancel with the owner. Apparently he called the next guy in line and he took it. Bittersweet as I really don't NEED it but I did want it. I told the guy when he called me back tonight, that I was really interested in that cart. He said the guy still has to come back and pick the rest of te stuff up so he would tell him about me wanting the cart and pass along my number. Here's hoping!!!....

Hi David. I guess i was the next guy in line! That cart caught my eye as well and i looked at it at 5 today and bought it. I was actually surprised he still had it. Sorry about grabbing it up, i didnt know anyone else was looking at it until i saw your post tonight while researching the cart.

Jimmy- the letters are exactly 6 inches high. I can send pics and other measurements if you need them. Im,looking to restore the cart so if you have a contact for the letters, id be very appreciative.

Are you guys in Charlotte? Im down in Waxhaw.

Jamie, please don't be sorry. It's almost a relief someone else got it so I don't have to spend the money. Hate passing on deals like that. Just keep me in mind if you ever want to sell the cart. My uncle lives in Waxhaw off of New Town. I live in Midland, just north of Monroe on 601. I'm in mower/garden tractor club that's out of Monroe. I also may know someone that can do those decals/letters for the cart. I'll PM you with some more info. Congrats on that great deal, glad it went to a good home and a fellow member on here.

A tractor club in Monroe? That's cool! I moved away from Monroe in '05, long before I got back into Gravelys. C'est la vie!

I'm east of Raleigh but a bunch of my collection is between Winston and Greensboro. We used to have an asphalt plant in Midland.

What is the spacing between the letters? Edge of the trailer to the edge of the lettering? Height off the bottom of the trailer?

Is it possible to get a tracing of them before you start restoring the trailer? I could take a ride in a month or two and come do the tracing myself and then I can scan them in on my blue print scanner. Then maybe Craig Seabrook or RG Graphix could help us out...

Nice snag.. I'll try to find the pictures of mine.. there are here somewhere.

That's a shame you left. The tractor club is really taking off with about 50 members now. I've got family in East Landing and Royal Oak MI.

The letters are on a slant, so its tough to measure. Let me see if i can work some photoshop magic tomorrow and i will send you a pic with measurements.

That would be great. While we are at it... does anyone know if these are already made by Seabrook or RG Graphix?
Jimmy. I did a tracing of the letters. If you pm me your address i will send it to you. If you could send me the file after you scan it that would be great. It is the same on both sides of the trailer so only one tracing is needed.
