Gravely 8179 clutch issue

695 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  tracktortag
I've got an 8179, with the old style clutches. It has started to pop out of forward gear, and the clutch seems not to be going properly "over-center".

I adjusted, slightly, the spacing between the disks, but this didn't help the "over-center" issue.

What am I missing on adjusting this clutch?

thanks

The first thing that comes to mind is linkage adjustment. You may also want to check to see if all three of the small clutch plate rollers are present. Finally, you may want to check the detents in the clutch assembly to see if they are worn, in which case the rollers would not be able to remain seated within them when engaged.

FWIW, the clutch gap should be .050 in. at both clutch plate attachment points.

I'm going to disassemble the forward clutch assembly and inspect for wear. If the rollers are okay, and the roller plate is not overly-worn, I would re-install the clutch assembly on the shaft, and move it to the full-extended over-center position. Then, I would adjust the rod length to match the arm hole position, with the control lever in the full forward position. Is that correct?

The clutch assy. should be adjusted with both the clutch assy., and shifter starting in their neutral positions (the clutch assy. rod attachment point in line with the top clutch plate roller, and the shifter at it's approximate 12 o'clock position). The linkage should also be detached from the clutch assy. At this point you would adjust the two by turning the yoke on the threaded rod so that the clutch, and shifter align in their neutral positions. You would then fine tune the adjustment so that forward, and reverse both engage equidistant from the shifter's neutral position.

Here is a link to Gravely's 800/8000 service manual. Forward/reverse adjustment procedure is covered on Pg. 9. Hope this helps.

OK, thanks. I'll give it a try.
