Gravely 816 with broken axle.
S/N 21488A which is a 1974 model.
Side case date = 1-30-74.
Rear end case = 1-8-74.

I am looking for the correct part number for the replacement axle. The old axle measures 15 3/8" long and has a diameter of 1 1/4" at the largest width. A picture of the differential is pictured (appears to NOT be a limited slip differential?).

I believe the correct part number for this axle is #19957 (new number #21129100). I also see reference to an axle #17977 .... but I think that is for the LSD differential? I want to be more sure of the correct part number before I order expensive parts.

Another question. Is it advised to use NEW factory axles .... or can "used parts" be worthwhile? I hate to put in a used axle if they are unreliable.

I am new to the Gravely forum and I thank you for any information you can provide.

I'm not really an 816 person, but normally there is no reason not to use good used parts. Unless someone who has better expertise regarding the 816 thinks differently about that particular part, the rest of the drive train is used so if you find a good or better condition used part -then why not?
I'll be interested to see what one of them has to say as well.

The advice about used parts is completely sound. I suspect the part you need is widely available. If unsure, you may want to try Richards Lawn and Garden in Spencer WV. They can help you with advice and parts (probably both new and used), seals, etc.

Any straight axle axle should work outa a 800 or 8000. Check the axle keyways before you buy is my only tip
