Governor problem??? Adjustments??

5765 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  2_Late_I_Won
So I have a 1950 8N and I thought there was something wrong but didn't worry about it but after I posted this on Youtube (take a listen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E48TBVLc1BM Other people have confirmed that my governor isn't working right. How do I fix this?

Basically when the tracor boggs down it just boggs down the governor doesn't give it more throttle. Is the spring to strong? or what do I need to do?

Thanks in advance

p.s. You might want to fast forward a full 2:00 min.

The governor sounds fine. The engine is running way too rich and only on 3 cylinders. Fix those problems and see what you have then.
Finally(someone chimmed in LOL)Thanks I can do that!! Well I did have some sea foam in it and I don't think it has burned it all off yet.
Would try to help you but living in the broadband blackhole (thanks ATT) not much can be done with your youtube uploads.
Seafoam won't fix the rich mixture or the dead hole. Start pulling plug wires and see which hole isn't running, it may just be a fouled plug. Then, run the tractor with the air filter disconnected to see if that is giving you the rich mixture. If not, start leaning the main jet on the carb. until the engine starts to falter, then turn it back just enough for smooth running.
Well thanks anyways JohnW I appreciate the thought :)

Well thanks to the hurrican we are going to be drenched for the next several days. It's hitting us today ( here in Oklahoma) I got out my manual last night and did a little reading. I'll take the air cleaner off ( which I just changed the oil in it after my last job) but I will still see if it helps. Then I was going to start from scratch and rest all the jets (Can't remember what the book said but I think it was one turn out on each )It is also supposed to idel @ 400rpm and it is about 600rpm. Anways the book will be right next to me when I do this LOL. Then I was going to pull the plugs and ck them then ck the points. I think I might ck the plugs first then do the carb then the points. Last I checked the plugs were pretty nasty so I cleaned them up really well. It's most likely because it is running to rich as you said.
Thanks you soooo much for your help I'll keep ya posted.

They say most of it will be here around 7:00 flash flood and all kinda of stuff and oh yeah it might spawn a tornado or two

Looks like the main part of it will miss us and go just to the east. I live pretty much right in the center where all the highways meet.
Send some of that rain my way... ground has not seen any rain for better than a month.

I watered some pine trees Monday and Tuesday that I planted this spring, and washed two cars and the truck so you know it rained Tuesday night. Its all good we needed the rain:fing32:

On the problem your having. I was working the tractor Monday and it started sputtering and acting up after an hour and I thought oh no not another coil. Well I babied it up to the barn and it barely made it. I jumped off and checked the fuel petcock setting, I had it on reserve. I re-set the fuel to on and it ran fine after that. check the simple stuff and then dig deeper.
Ya'll can have some of my rain, take it please. We've gotten 10" since monday. Everythings pretty much saturated so all the latest rainfall is just causing flash flooding.

Ought to get another good mosquito crop in before it cools off.
We had the 5th driest Aug of all time So we really needed the rain. It wasn't too bad. It rained alot and it is supposed to dry out a just in time for the weekend.
Well I cked the spark last night. And I'm going to just replace all the plugs and wires. I checked #3 and there wasn't a big difference so I also noticed the PO put regular auto spark plug wires on. The #3 wire had over 10 ohms of resistance and I saw a little corrosion so. I'm picking up some Autolite
437 plugs and a set of solid copper core wires. (the points looked brand new!!! so I cleaned them up with a bit of fine grit sand paper) After this I'll see how it runs then adjust the carb!!

Thanks for your help!!:thThumbsU:trink39:
Get the grit out of those points, some brakleen and a business card swipe to get out any residue!

Amen to that. My dog leaves a trail of dust clouds when she walks through what's left of my yard.

I would check the plugs first, if you've got a dead cylinder, you'll see it in the difference between the plugs. If it's running rich, the plugs will have a black dry sooty appearance. I set my mixture by the manual with one turn out after rebuilding the carb. I ended up setting the running mixture by using the choke as a guide. If I could pull the choke out at all and the engine didn't change, I kept adjusting it till a small adjustment on the choke started a sputter. Not real scientific but it ended up running very well and not hot at all.

Wow What a huge difference!! Changed the plugs to Autolite 437 and solid copper core wires. Had trouble with the firing order. I knew it was 1243 but I didn't know how it went on cap. Well after the first attempt...... Nothing Changed 3 and 4 just for the heck of it. Starts but really really rough. Changed the other two and it runs but not to good. I got my Harborfreight infrared themometer ($25.00) and noticed the 2 and 3 were 20*+ cooler switched them and wow it's like a new machine. No bogging or anything.
What happened was I put the 1 wire on the 1 on the cap. The 1 on the cap actually means your almost there 1 more counter clockwise is actually where one is LOL

But thanks $30.00 was all it took.
The old wires had any where from 6.39 ohms (6" long) to well over 12 ohms ( about 2' long)
