Got me a free STX38 question about PTO clutch.

Hey my neighbor brought his stx38 to the shop because the electric clutch wouldn't engage. The shop stated that he needed a new clutch and the estimate was around $300.

My neighbor ended up buying another unit so he gave me this one. Ended up looking it over tonight and I noticed that the PTO indeed wont engage the blades.

I get no indication from the switch that it's working ( no noises ) so I started looking at the clutch itself...when I disconnected the plastic connector from the PTO I saw three wires two (2) that run up towards the hood cover...the other (not the same color but forgot what it was) runs about 4-5 inches and is left hanging.

The wire is stripped of it's insulation at the top leaving around 1/2" of the copper exposed.

Is this how it should be or should this wire be connected to something like a ground?

I'm going to look into the clutch further at a later time...I only had about 30mins to spend tonight.

One more thing...if it turns out to be the clutch how hard is it to change?

I only saw one bolt on the bottom pulley under the PTO and was wondering if I just remove that bolt and pull the whole assembly out. I'm not really sure how the clutch is mounted on the shaft.

Hi, Matt. I'll start at the end first. 1 bolt holds the clutch on. My STX38 only has 2 wires running from it, goes up thru a hole by the starter, and connects to a wire connector in that vicinity. Then, a wire from the connector goes back down and ends up connecting (ground wire) to an engine mounting bolt. Pretty simple operation.

as usual brad is right-on!

I just did my STX38 PTO and many times they are just dirty or out of alignment... if it really is bad they are about $150-175$ and it takes about a 30-45 mins to install. (NOTE: stx38s are seperated into two distinct groups, STX38 Yellow Deck and STX38 Black Deck, the PTOs are different but the procedure is the same) mine is a yellow deck-

To check the PTO directly, disconnect the connector, with the end coming from the PTO connect 12Vdc directly from the battery to the two connections, the clutch "should" click. (if you do this test with the clutch still on the machine remove the mower belt)

the PTO on an STX38 is just a big electromagnet, and unless a winding wire breaks they are usually repairable, and always replaceable.

See the link below, if you read the complete thread, Brad is 100% correct about using an impact wrench, but on the cheap, my way of removing the PTO clutch works like a charm and with no special tools...

FWIW - I see black deck PTOs on eBay for 145$ but I do not see a single yellow deck PTO, there were many just a week ago... probably one there though maybe listed by part number etc. :trink40:

Thanks for the information thus far...it is black deck. I'll look into the diagnostic later in the week.

Does anyone else have three wires coming from the PTO connection with one not hooked up to anything?

Thats for the connection to the Brother-in-Law circuit. You know the one that's always around and doesn't do anything!!!! Sorry just had to do it!! :ROF
