Got a new to me lt today. Couple questions

So I got a yardworks ( Canadian tire brand ) lawn tractor today, it has a 17hp single cylinder " intec " Briggs motor and an 8 speed hydro transmission.

The motor works fine as does most else but I have a question about the tranny. Never having a hydro before I'm a complete noob to them.

Is it possible to change / top up the hydro fluid? If so what fluid would one use? The tranny seems to work fine, but don't always seem to engage in first gear. From a quick look at it, it seems the gears are really just a lever applying the brake. ( 1st has the brake applied the most while top gear has no brake at all)

Also in top gear it takes about 50ft or so for it to get going fully ( concern or not? )

Should this tranny be used for pulling a trailer or no?

I have no idea what Model the tractor is or what year here's a pic of the same machine,
Not me but the same mower.

Thanks

OK... gonna blow u away.. that does NOT have a hydro tranny.. ur tranny only has forward.. neutral & reverse.. the 8 speeds ur speakin of is done by a couple belts on a variator drive system.. it is a crappy system as it eats up the belts..
I was gonna sit on my hands but whirly dropped one shoe. I read a scathing story about a fellow who bought one. Said he ruined three "transmissions" in three years. I'm pretty sure he was talking about belts. He was very, very unhappy with it. However, if it's just a belt per year and it's not a monumental chore to change, I guess that's a doable deal. He had bought an extended warrantee and all the work was done by the guys he'd bought it from. I guess they were replacing belts but he thought they were replacing transmissions.

I will add this.. both drive belts on the variator should b changed at the same time so both grab their best.. I found it a PITA to change them..

So aside from the belts are these trannys half durable? If someone could post an exploded view of the belt setup that would be great!

Also I'm assuming the parent company to yardworks is MTD?

Thanks again

If it's eating belts that quickly there's something wrong. It's either poorly designed or something's askew. I worked for 25 years on Bell & Howell mailing machines and a couple of their models were AC driven with a similar setup to provide speed control. On those, they were operated every day all day and the belts would last for over a decade on some of them. We had spare belts in our stock but they were very old because they hardly ever got replaced.
