Hi! New to the site and subject, never realized how complicated all this is! :banghead3

I'm checking out riding mowers, that aren't too expensive (absolutely below $2k and preferably closer/at $1k), that just need to mow around 1/2 - 2/3 of an acre of grass every Spring/Summer/Fall weekend.

No ditches, hills, bunkers, etc., although there are trees and some minor tree roots.

Is there a defacto go to mower that you all recommend for this, or, is it basically a crapshoot and just go find a deal someplace?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice/perspective!

Chuck

You may want to look at Cub Cadet 1000 series lawn tractors avaliable either from a Dealer or a Box Store
At the Box store level In my opinion The best you can get is a Cub Cadet 1000 series
1. serviceable Transmission meaning oil can be changed
2. 9gauge steel frame
3. Price won't kill you
4. Perfect for 1/2 acre

1. LTX 1040 MSRP: $1,649.00 - Sale Price: $1,499.00 19hp Kohler ,Variable speed trans 2belt system & 42inch deck

2. LTX1042 MSRP: $1,799.00 - Sale Price: $1,649.00 19hp Kohler, Hydrostatic trans & 42inch deck

3. LTX 1045 MSRP: $1,899.00 - Sale Price: $1,699.00 20hp Kohler, Hydrostatic trans & 46inch deck

4.LTX 1046 VT MSRP: $1,999.00 - Sale Price: $1,799.00 23hp V twin Briggs& stratton, Hydrostatic trans & 46inch deck

5. LTX 1046 MSRP: $2,099.00 - Sale Price: $1,899.00 22hp V twin Kohler, Hydrostatic trans & 46inch deck

6. LTX 1050 VT MSRP: $2,249.00 - Sale Price: $1,999.00 24hp V twin Briggs& stratton, Hydrostatic trans & 50inch deck

Another New Brand to check out might be the Husqvarna LS series a YTH22v26 LS staring at $1,999

Used in your price range I would look at:
John Deere
LX100 Series,LX200 Series,LT100 series don't get confused with L or LA 100 series & a used X300 model from the Current series

Simplcity:
Regent or it's clones under Snapper,AGCO or Massey Ferguson
Broadmoor or it's clones under Snapper,AGCO or Massey Ferguson

I'm not to Keen on the Deere LA100 because of the Tuff-Torq T40 trans that is in most models except the LA165 and LA175 That have a Tuff-Torq K46 like the entery level X300 series has(X300,X304) But both the LA165 & LA175 are above your price range.

Hope this gives you some Idea in your price range :thThumbsU

Sergent gave you lots of options for a decent new machine.

It does not need to be much to handle 1/2 acre. It's just grass unless you live in Florida, then it is like wire. Keep it lubed and the blades sharp.

To give you some perspective, I use a cheap MTD ride-on (which I would not recommend) to manage 1 flat acre for the past 10 years. I think a deck bearing now needs replacement, that's all. A 22 inch push mower will do 1/2 acre in an hour, which is what I did until DW got me the rider.

I've been satisfied with running Craftsman tractors. Never got a new one though, always run used.

I did run a new John Deere tractor, 48" deck, hydrostatic trans, etc. After running that and a DLT-2000 Craftsman with a hydrostat trans and 48" deck, I liked the Craftsman better. Seemed to mow just as nice if not better and I didn't have to push a reverse override switch every time I wanted to back up.

Chuck, if it's all about the budget. I'd go to Home Depot and get one of these; 42" deck, real gear drive as opposed to a variator or very low end hydrosatic. This one is $999.
