Getting rid of the steering wheel?

2635 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  nibs
The steering on my craftsman gt4000 conversion is getting kind of iffy.
Right now a metal zip tie is holding the ball joint in place beside the front wheel.
I have a 24V actuator and a DPDT self centering switch which I could mount and loose the whole steering disaster that craftsman dreamt up.
Any thoughts?

I would want a variable control so you could control how fast the wheels steer. If you use the switch you described it would be hard to control.

a rheostat would give him a slower option when needed..
Whirly, do you have limit switches on the actuator?
I can select any voltage from 6 - 24 for steering response, if I center tap the batts.

I cheated.. no actuator.. instead I used the cyl that lifted the deck of the MF.. under the dash is a 2 spool valve.. I plan on makin the box dump hydraulically .. in the sterrin circuit I have a needle valve that restricts the amount of hyd fluid.. without it at full flow.. it takes less than 2 seconds to go from full left to full right..

Using the tractor the other day it started to get hard to steer, (went republican) would only turn right, just banged as the teeth slipped.
Well we put the tractor on its side and now there is an actuator in place which seems to be ok. waiting on a dtdp momentary switch which should be here by Tuesday so we can steer again. Gonna start out at 12V until we get used to it then maybe go to 24V for fun.
May leave the steering wheel in place so the grandkids can play when they visit.

Pics of the actuator connected up to the steering, and the steering switch.
going forward is pretty intuitative, but when I go to reverse, my old tiller steering sailboat habits kick in.

Sorry I dunno how to bring the pics over but here they are in flikr.

That's neat!
Looking at what you put that machine through, I think I see why the factory steering setup may have been the weak link...
how about this for not having a steering wheel?

be safe,

Hey what a great little machine that is.

Gotta admit that the joy stick steering is not intuitive yet, took a road trip today to get propane & try out the steering at speed, had to slow down to keep on the sidewalk.
The actuator does have the jam to handle a 350 lb load, roll of roofing. not sure why we weave a bit.
