My 816 came with a quarter turn gauge cap. It doesn't have the raised cap in the center. I guess that would be a vent cap? The only other difference is that it measures 12 1/2 inches. It has been accurate, the float has never hung up, and I like being able to see the fuel level without having to guess, or open the cap, as you mentioned.

Seals tight w/ no leakage and you can view gas level without opening the tank.
I know it's not exactly proper and stock to the tractor but it works great.
