It's been awhile since I have spent any time behind the wheel of my HT23... and 15+ years since I used grandpas HT20. Some of you may have followed my other post where I recently put grandpas old HT20 back together and gave it new life after being buried all those years.

My question though... is it normal to inhale so much carbon monoxide? I literally thought mowing would kill me lol. Yet it was so fun to drive it again... that i determined it was worth stinking and getting a headache for.

Anyways - is it my carb adjustments? Valve issues? It doesn't smoke unless you throttle down and only a little at start up.

Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions.

Nick

Do you have the top heat cover on the motor? This allows the air coming from the flywheel to push out each side of the motor. If not, then it might be blowing up into your face. Or you might have a hole in your manifold or exhaust and that could be allowing carbon monoxide to blow up at you. Does it have the factory muffler on it?

100% factory - cannot find any leaks. However i'm catching a lot of fumes while running it. It smokes a little during start up, and when throttling down or up - but goes away under load. I noticed some suet on the hood too - so i'm wondering if it's burning oil or burning rich (It wouldn't run with the carb set to the factory 2 turn and 1-1/4 turn that my manual states). Although - the manual I have is for my HT23. Tractor does have an electric fuel pump on it...

Any other thoughts?

i'm wondering if the electric fuel pump is the culprit and if the carb needs a new float etc. It runs fine - but I believe it is running rich. It has got some suet on the hood and it stinks when it runs - not like burnt oil - but possibly more fuel. If memory serves me right - the smoke is nearly white with some gray at initial startup and throttle down. It's also backfired or popped a few times at shutoff, but nothing loud or to bad.
