All my tractors have 'el cheapo' plastic fuel valves installed in the fuel line, in addition to the manufacturer's valves. Several Mfg. valves are in such a location that they can't be gotten to easily to shut off.
While in the fuel line, I've added fuel filters, even if the Mfg. has them installed.

the shut off valve on my Craftsman model 917.258/581 with the CV16s engine has quit working. Can I just replace this with a fuel bowl plug, or is it more complicated than that.
Well I didn't know what you were referring to at first either but I think you mean the carb solenoid valve and the answer is yes, if you can find one to fit. You may have to let the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting of to keep it from "after firing" making a loud bang. If that doesn't work, shut it off at half throttle.
