I have an Onan B43M on my '74 Gravely 816T. (a recent purchase)I recently posted "carb issues" and happy to say we made progress, but the front yard only got half done, because the tractor kept having fuel delivery issues. Sometimes it would die, sometimes I could disengage the pto, and back down the throttle & save it. but it happened more & more frequently to the point I gave up trying to finish mowing.

So part of the carb re-furb, was the addition of an in-line fuel filter. It's clear, and I could see it was only 30 - 60% full, never 100%.

About 1 1/2 hours since I pushed it into the garage, I was happy to see the filter was about 90% full of fuel. It fired right up, put quit after about 15 seconds Did it twice, then no start at all. I've got my ideas, based on what I've read about the crud in the gas tak & probably in the fuel line too. But please share your experiences.

My 5665 has similar issues. New filter and lines and cleaned out gas tank too. I couldn't find any Definitive problems. It has the same problems you describe when the tank is less than half full. Now I just keep the tank more than half full and the problem doesn't come back. Silly answer, but it works until mowing season is over and I can devote more time to get to the real cause.

I would definitly drain the tank, new fuel lines and new filter. Maybe your pump is bad/failing. Drop bowl on carb at least and even better to take it apart and clean it while you are at it.

Also fill you tank all the way and I bet the issue goes away......just a hunch.

Holly, Had the same issues on my 12G Kohler.. I put all new hoses and changed the fuel filter. The root cause was the fuel pump. I put a new pump on and the tractor runs like new..Hope this helps
So, is there a "Best Source" or best brand for a replacement fuel pump!?? :dunno:

I had this 12HP running on a IV setup directly to the carb.

The fuel pump was barely spurting gas out, so I believe the pump will need to be addressed!!

I've been experiencing similar issues with my 5665 the last two days. I had the carb. bowl off yesterday, blew out the jets with compressed air and just today reset the point gap. It is still shutting down, but doesn't do it right away.

One thing I did notice is that if I tip the tractor forward, it will stall out. Easy to do with the stump grinder on it! if I lean it back, it will sometimes revive itself and generally run fine. Problem is I need to tip it foward to do the stump grinding :duh:

Definitely seems fuel delivery-related.

Adjusting that brass float was the ticket. The old level must have been sufficient before the carb re-furb that included the new reed fuel pump. I was afraid to try it even though I new it wasn't to spec. Never know how easy something can be 'till you try I guess. Thanks for all the help!
